Why is it a law to where a seat belt, when you own the car, and it is your life?

I know it the smart thing to do and you should want to, but

This is a free country

Should we have the choice if we want to or not?|||The main reason is that it gives the police one more reason to pull you over and check you out for no good reason. I've heard the excuse, "OH, I though you weren't wearing your seat belt." quite a few times. Another reason is that EMTs don't need to clean up such a big mess if you stay strapped into your seat.|||The law makes it easier to get the idiot in the passenger seat to wear one so that if something goes wrong you don't have a couple of hundred pounds of passenger bouncing all over you. Of course the idiots that don't also don't have insurance so we pay their hospital bills.

|||It's the law as it protects you, and others. I had friend who made her choice not to wear her seatbelt, and she also made a choice not to restrain her baby. Instead, she sat unrestrained in the frontseat, held her baby on her lap, and killed it when they went through the windscreen in an accident. Our friend was driving, and looked down for a second to find her cigarettes, and smashed into the back of a car that was stopped at the lights. I saw my friend and her baby being ejected through the windscreen, just like a crash test, but real life with screaming, shattering bones, blood, etc, etc! It wasn't pretty. Then I had to help my friend who was near death, lying on the bonnet with blood pouring out everywhere, and then, sadly there was her daughter, who was killed instantly. I close my eyes, and I see her broken body, mangled, broken and her severed head further down the road. It's stories like these, and countless others, that explain why it's the law to wear a seatbelt, and restrain kids. It's to stop you from thinking if only I'd worn my seatbelt, or restrained my child, like my friend, who has never fully recovered, and never will. She can't see a child on it's mothers lap, or riding unrestrained without breaking down. It's so you won't have to go through this.........or the windscreen!|||There is more than just one side to this question. First I would agree, that it is just because it gives the officers more of an opportunity to pull someone over. Secondly I had a friend get decapitated from wearing her seat belt. And finally it really doesn't matter if you are wearing a seat belt when a freaking eighteen wheeler cuts you off the road or smashes into you going 70 miles an hour. Sure it is designed for safety but at those speeds any type of collision will create injuries.|||The answer is because driving on the public roadways is not a right, but a privilege. Because it is a privilege, the state has the right to limit its use, such as traffic laws which restrict speed, lane usage, seat belt use, radar detectors, etc.

You have a right to not use seat belts, speed, do donuts and roll your car if you want when you are on your private property or property where you have permission - as in racetracks. Racetrack owners have the right to set the rules on their property, such as requiring helmets and seat belts in race cars.|||Because the rest of us don't have a choice when it comes to picking up the pieces you left behind. In addition you just might not be killed, but seriously injured or maimed for life. Then we all get to support you for the rest of your life.

The law is made just for idiots like you. The greatest good for the greatest number.

Freedom does not mean you get to do anything you want. Freedom is a concept that a lot of people misunderstand as the right to be irresponsible. It is not.

If it were a free world as you see it, then we could all wear six shooters and kill anyone we want because we did not like the look on their faces.|||The state has he right to regulate when it's in the public interest, and the wearing of seat belts clearly is. Just look at the statistics of injury without seat belts, and the cost to the state.|||Who pays for your medical treatment after you end up going through the windscreen, or with major chest injuries after you have hit the steering wheel. or if you are in the back, have flown forward and crushed the driver or passenger?

We all do.|||America is not as free as we think it is. There are a lot of stupid laws here. Especially here in VA (radar detectors against the law!). But we still have to follow them. Darn government!!!|||YES WE SHOULD

AND THE OTHER IS MONEY|||ill put what tall paul said in simple terms...

the state saves money when your not hurt|||This law came as a result of the many complaints the government has received from the relatives of people that died during car injury. Every family probably has 1 member that died in a car accident. Governments are made up by these same people, and if all these people feel that it should be the law to wear a seat belt, then so it happens. When you lose a relative in a car accident just because he/she didnt wear a seat belt, then you start pressuring the government to make it illegal not to wear a seat belt.|||Because when people get into accidents and don't use seat belts, they get more injured than if they did use them.

Now, where this is any one Else's business is because as a society we use our collective resource's (Tax dollars) to insure that our citizens have help in an emergency. We pay for fire departments, police, and hospitals. Even if you can't pay for your hospital they can't deny you life saving treatment.

The more injured you are the more it costs all of us (in tax dollars) to keep you alive. No one likes higher taxes....

I hope this clears up for you what your responsibility is to the rest of the country as far as your personal seat belt use..|||Its a law because the politicians can stand in front of the podium on the nightly news and brag about how many lies they are going to save with this legislation.

This, like so many other feel-good laws (ADA, TREAD act, etc) does not really do what it is intended and infringes on civil liberty but the polls get re-elected because of it anyway.|||The only purpose of a seatbelt is to keep you inside the car during an accident. Thousands of tests have proven that inside the car, buckled in is without a doubt the safest place to be.

Paramedics and fire fighters agree: It's much easier to rescue you and try to save your life when all required body parts are located in one general area versus your spleen being in the right ditch and your lungs being in the passing lane with a semi bearing down on them!

The bottom line: It's the law! If you don't like it don't drive.|||IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT MAKE OUR INSURANCE PRICES GO UP.
