Can a 98 Ford Escort be driven 75+ miles without serpentine belt?

A friend of mine has a 98 Escort wagon that has a problem with shredding the serpentine belt. The car is stuck about 75 miles from where he lives. If I bring a bunch of spare batteries, would it be safe for him to drive the car home? I believe the water pump is driven by the timing belt on the 2 liter SPI engine, so I think it would be ok that way.|||I don't think you will get very far on a missing belt. Also, I have a friend that worked as a Ford Tech for 35 years. The number one reason for shredded belts on a Ford vehicle is a bad power steering pump.|||You are right, the timing belt does drive the water pump. BUT. and this is a big but, don't use any accessories, lights, turn signals( if you can get away with it) radio, and AC. A fully charged batteries should get you 75 miles without a problem. Power steering might be a little stiff.

The idler or tensioner is bad and causing the belt to be thrown.

Good luck. ps the CHP is out in force this weekend.|||would be smarter to replace the belt then drive it since would be lucky to go a mile with out a belt and belt easy to put on with one wrench coul dgo to any parts store get a new belt an dask what size wrench i need to replace this belt you wil not get far without belt wil end up towing it just replace belt heres a few how to replace about half way down page|||you can, just keep in mind not to run any electrical items in car, because alternator isn't charging|||i dont think it will make it that far with no belt...you'll get like 15 minutes on a charged battery. so only as far as you can go in 15 min...my alternator took a dump on my way to work and i couldnt make it all the way to work. i went about 10 miles from when it went out.

but for about $100 you can get a year of premier AAA and they will tow you 4 times...200 miles, and 3x 100 miles. its the best 100 you will ever spend.
